Materials: Board Options and Trade-Offs

Board choice affects how the box looks, how it stacks and how it behaves against a soft, buttery product. These are the options we quote most often for fudge packaging boxes.

• SBS paperboard, 16pt to 24pt: a bright white, smooth board that prints vivid color. It is the default for tuck-end and window cartons. The trade-off is cost per unit, which runs higher than kraft at the same caliper.

• Rigid greyboard, wrapped: a thick, non-folding board covered with printed paper. It gives the most solid feel for gift assortments but costs more and ships assembled, so freight is higher.

• E-flute corrugated: a thin corrugated board used for mailers. It resists denting in transit better than paperboard but has a slightly textured print surface, so fine detail can soften.

Recycled-fiber options may be available depending on supplier, and FSC-certified options may be available depending on supplier documentation. If either matters for your brand, mention it at the quote stage so we can check current stock before we price.

Any board that touches food should be a food-contact-appropriate grade. Confirm requirements during quoting, especially if the fudge will sit directly on the board without a liner.

Printing and Finishing Options

Finishing does two jobs on a fudge box: it protects the printed surface from handling marks and it sets the tone of the brand. The options below can be combined, and each one adds a step to production, so we will tell you what it does to the schedule and the unit price.

• Gloss lamination: a clear film that makes colors pop and wipes clean, useful for counter boxes that get handled often.

• Matte lamination: a soft, low-glare film that reads as calm and modern, popular on gift boxes.

• Aqueous coating: a water-based clear coat applied on press. It offers light scuff resistance at a lower cost than lamination.

• Embossing and debossing: raised or recessed logo areas that add touch without adding color.

• Spot UV: a glossy varnish printed only on chosen areas, often layered over matte lamination for contrast.

• Window film: clear PET or BOPP film applied behind a die-cut opening so the fudge is visible.

Coatings may help with light surface protection depending on coating, liner and contact duration, but they are not a substitute for a liner where fudge touches the board. We will flag this if your artwork suggests an unlined design.

Fudge Box Sizes: Common Planning Formats

Fudge is sold by weight, so most box sizes map to a weight rather than a piece count. The formats below are planning references drawn from typical orders. They are not verified specs for your slab, so send your cut size and we will confirm a dieline before anything is made.

Interior height should allow for the liner and a little headroom, since a lid pressed tight against soft fudge will leave marks on the surface.

Liners, Parchment and Direct Contact

Fudge is placed straight into the box, so the liner is part of the packaging spec rather than an afterthought. Parchment, glassine or wax-coated paper sheets are the usual choices, cut to the inside footprint or folded up the sides as a tray.

Direct and indirect contact may need different substrates or coatings. A box with a full liner is indirect contact; a box where pieces touch the board is direct contact and may call for a different board grade. We confirm this during quoting rather than assume.

Some buyers add paper dividers so squares of different flavors do not blend, or a small pad under the lid to limit movement. Both can be quoted alongside the box, and both are worth considering if your fudge travels more than a few miles.

To quote accurately we need five things: the inside dimensions or weight per box, the number of pieces per box, the box style, your target quantity and whether the box sells at a counter or ships in the mail. Artwork can follow once the structure is agreed.

After artwork approval you receive a digital proof, and a physical sample can be arranged for a first order. Reorders on locked artwork may reduce proofing time because the structure and artwork are already approved, but standard production remains 10–14 business days after artwork approval unless otherwise confirmed.
